What are the technical performance characteristics of Tubing pup joints?

Mar 01, 2024

Tubing pup joints are short sections of tubing pipe used to make up precise lengths when running tubing strings in oil and gas wells.

I. Technical Performance Characteristics of Tubing Pup Joint

◆Length - Tubing pup joints range from 2 ft to 10 ft in length. Common sizes are 2 ft, 5 ft, and 10 ft. The wide range allows for selecting ideal lengths to fine-tune tubing string lengths.

◆Diameter - The diameter matches the parent tubing size. Standard sizes range from 1.050 in. to 4.5 in. diameter. Wall thickness also corresponds to the parent tubing body.

◆Material - Typically manufactured from the same grade of steel as the tubing string. Common materials include J55, N80, L80, P110 alloys. Corrosion-resistant alloys like 13Cr stainless steel are also used.

◆Connections - Pup joints have the identical tubing connections as the main string. This includes common API connections, and premium threads like DUO-S, and TFI.

◆Pressure Rating - Rated to equivalent pressures as the tubing string, usually a minimum of 3,000 psi. Higher strength material grades provide increased pressure ratings.

◆Torque - High torque capacity connections used to match tubing string. Cold-rolled threads and wedge designs enable make-up to high rotational specs.

◆Centralization - Pup joints often include integral centralizer blades to provide standoff and stabilization.

◆Coatings - May have internal plastic coatings or ID cladding like CORTEC anti-corrosive barrier. Externally have fusion bonded epoxy coating.

◆Testing - Manufacturing quality control includes dimensional inspections, mechanical testing, and visual and non-destructive testing as per API specifications.

◆Certification - Supplied with certificate of compliance as per API 5CT certification requirements.

The goal is to fabricate pup joints with equivalent mechanical attributes and performance capabilities as the parent tubing.

II. Main Usages of Tubing Pup Joint

◆Adjusting String Length - The primary purpose is to adjust the overall length when running tubing. Pups compensate for slight deviations in planned length.

◆Enabling Precise Positioning - Allow accurate positioning of tubing at the required depth. This is essential for some completions.

◆Attaining Optimal Setting Depths - Enable attaining optimal packer or seal setting depths for proper annular isolation.

◆Spacing Out Equipment - Used for proper spacing out of completion components like gas lift valves, sliding sleeves, etc.

◆Avoiding Near Proximity - Help avoid locating tubing joints near cement plugs, packers, etc. which can cause stress.

◆Remedial Operations - Useful for remedial operations requiring accurately positioned tubing conveyance.

Tubing pup joints are short tubular with similar properties as tubing pipe. They provide a cost-effective method to fine-tune lengths and optimize positioning in tubing strings. With an understanding of their technical attributes and applications, pup joints can be effectively utilized. If you need procurement solutions, please contact us at info@vigorpetroleum.com.
