Bridge plugs are downhole tools that are set to isolate the lower part of a wellbore. Bridge plugs may be permanent or retrievable, enabling the lower wellbore to be permanently sealed from production or temporarily isolated from a treatment conducted on an upper zone. They are composed of slips, mandrel, and elastomers (sealing elements).
Bridge plugs are also employed for plugging and abandonment operations. When the quantity of hydrocarbon in a reservoir is no longer commercial or the reservoir volume has been drained via production, the need to abandon the well arises. The well designer may choose to set bridge plugs in conjunction with cement slurries to ensure that higher density cement does not fall in the wellbore. In that case, the bridge plug would be set and cement pumped on top of the plug through drillpipe, and then the drillpipe withdrawn before the slurry thickened.
Vigor Completion Packers
The packer (more accurately described as the 'upper completion production packer') is a key piece of downhole equipment in many completions - a sealing device that isolates and contains produced fluids and pressures within the tubing string; it is a well barrier element, usually part of the well's primary well barrier, protecting the casing and creating an A-annulus. The packer is essential to the basic functioning of most wells, injectors or producers. Alternatives to using a production packer include a dynamic seal assembly, a cemented completion and a packerless completion.
A perforation in the context of oil wells refers to a hole punched in the casing or liner of an oil well to connect it to the reservoir. It creates a channel between the pay zone and the wellbore to cause oil and gas to flow to the wellbore easily. In cased hole completions, the well will be drilled down past the section of the formation desired for production and will have casing or a liner run in separating the formation from the well bore. The final stage of the completion will involve running in perforating guns, a string of shaped charges, down to the desired depth and firing them to perforate the casing or liner. A typical perforating gun can carry many dozens of explosive charges.
