Wireline Gyro While Drilling Cuts Survey Rig Time

Oct 15, 2026

Top-hole sections on crowded pads and platforms are drilled under a survey constraint: direction has to be known before the next connection, and a separate wireline gyro run costs rig time the programme does not have. Wireline gyro while drilling answers this by lowering a gyroscopic survey assembly through the drill string on cable, so inclination and azimuth reach the driller and remote users while the hole is being made rather than after a dedicated survey trip.

Deployment Geometry Inside the Drill String

The assembly runs inside the drill pipe and lands close to the bit, which shortens the distance between the measurement point and the formation being drilled and improves the steering decisions taken between surveys. It is protected by a pressure shield offered at 38 mm and 45 mm, equal to about 1.50 inches and 1.77 inches, and rated to between 100 MPa and 140 MPa. Thermal protection matters as much as pressure: the probe is rated to 100 degrees Celsius, and with a thermos flask the assembly reaches 175 degrees Celsius, so the tool can stay downhole through longer intervals without a cooling trip. Running inside the pipe also changes the failure mode compared with an openhole deployment, because the assembly is shielded from drilling fluid circulation and from the impact loads that act on tools landed in the bottomhole assembly.

Survey Cadence at Connections

The practical gain is cadence. Because the survey is acquired during connections, the drilling programme no longer carries separate gyro runs on slickline or electric line. Published top-hole programmes describe drop gyro campaigns that add roughly 9 to 12 hours of rig time per well, and one multiwell platform campaign reported 12.6 days saved across 15 top holes, with fewer personnel on board and no wireline exposure during top-hole drilling. Taking a reading at each connection also means the survey covers the section continuously instead of at a handful of discrete depths chosen days earlier, and the directional driller gets the update at the point where a steering correction can still be made cheaply rather than after the section is finished.

Wireline Gyro While Drilling Accuracy Grades

Two grades are offered. The standard probe gives azimuth to within 1.5 degrees over the full 360 degrees of the circle and inclination to within 0.15 degrees through the 0 to 90 degrees range. The high-precision version tightens those figures to 0.3 degrees of azimuth and 0.03 degrees of inclination, and is aimed at horizontal directional drilling, where a small azimuth error accumulates into large lateral displacement over a long horizontal section. Both grades gyro-compass at any inclination, so no recalibration is needed as the well builds angle.

High Latitude, Sidetracks and Relief Wells

Vertical, directional and horizontal drilling

Multiwell pad and batch well drilling

Offshore and onshore drilling

High-latitude drilling, sidetracking, and relief and intervention wells

High latitude is a specific driver: magnetic azimuth references weaken toward the poles, so a gyroscopic reference holds its accuracy where magnetic tools lose theirs, and no latitude correction has to be applied to the result. Sidetracking needs an accurate orientation before milling starts, because the window is cut once and cannot be recut higher in the same casing joint. Relief wells need a known position relative to the well being relieved, which makes a continuous gyro survey worth considerably more than a spot check taken at one depth.

Wireline Gyro While Drilling Quality Control

The system is described as fully transparent for quality control, with third-party verification possible, which matters when survey data feeds an anti-collision review or a regulatory filing. Real-time transmission over the cable and winch lets the directional driller and the remote office see the same numbers at the same time, and the raw measurements can be reprocessed independently rather than accepted as a closed result. That auditability is often the reason the method is written into the drilling programme in the first place, particularly on pads where several operators hold offset wells and the anti-collision file has to be defensible to a partner rather than only to the drilling superintendent. Where a survey is later questioned, having the raw gyro measurements archived alongside the transmitted values is what allows the dispute to be settled on data instead of on recollection.

Rig time is the currency of top-hole drilling. Wireline gyro while drilling removes a dedicated survey trip from the critical path, delivers 0.3 degrees azimuth accuracy in its high-precision form, and gives the directional team a verification record it can defend.
