The Free Point Indicator (FPI) from Vigor is an electro-mechanical assembly designed to accurately measure torque or stretch in harsh conditions to locate precisely where drill pipe, tubing, or casing is stuck or partially stuck. The basic Free Point tool assembly consists of bow spring or magnet, upper and lower anchors, and a sensor section to determine stuck point.Additional components that must be run with the Free Point tool assembly are: sinker bars to overcome the holding ability of the anchors, a casing collar locator (CCL) to determine depth and a slack joint to relieve weight above the tool assembly when at the correct depth for making a measurement.
For greater flexibility, the FPI can be configured with bow springs or magnets instead of motorized anchors. Bow springs, used when the inner diameter of the pipe is too large for the motorized arms, have carbide-coated outer springs that grip the pipe to aid anchoring. If the inner diameter is too large for both bow springs and motorized anchors, magnetic anchors can be used.
The FPI creates less friction or drag, making it easier to maneuver into high-angle and horizontal wells. It uses a controllable anchoring force down hole, instead of setting a constant force before the run, and a shorter tool string. Its four-arm system, faster setup time, and simple maintenance make it ideal for deployment in horizontal wells. There is no need for extra force to pass over restrictions, and shear pins enable retrieval if communication to the tool is lost. The FPI system is available with crossovers to several service company connections, for improved flexibility.
A wide range of tools are available for operations inside large diameter casings and small diameter pipe sizes which can be run simultaneously with explosive string shot assemblies. And the FPI tools are available to 30,000 psi operations on all types of wire lines, including nickel (sour service) wire line.
