Choosing the Optimal Norris Sucker Rod –Sizes and Strength

Dec 26, 2023

Norris sucker rods are a popular choice among oil producers for their durability, strength, and cost-effectiveness, which pays dividends in maximizing the run life and output of well. When looking to purchase it, two key specifications buyers have questions about are sizing/dimensions, and strength.

Dimension and Sizing

Norris sucker rods are available in a range of diameters, most commonly 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch or 1 inch. The appropriate diameter depends primarily on the oil well pump stroke and plunger size. A general guideline is to size Norris rods approximately 1/8 inch smaller than the pump plunger diameter. This properly centers the rod string within the tubing while allowing adequate clearance space for oil flow.

The most frequently supplied Norris rod lengths are 25, 30, or 37 feet. However, with mature oil fields, the pumping depth often exceeds these standard lengths. In that case, custom Norris rod lengths can be manufactured. The supplier will need details on your exact well depth and pump set to determine the total rod string length and custom segments required.

Strength Grades

Norris sucker rods are manufactured in various steel grades to provide different strength capabilities:

• Grade "AC" – Heat treated for moderate strength in shallow to medium-depth wells

• Grade "CC" – Higher strength chrome steel for corrosive wells up to 6,000 feet

• Grade "RC" – Heat treated, high strength for depths exceeding 8,000 feet

The appropriate grade depends on well depth, pump load requirements, and runtime desired before replacement. Consult our engineering tables to match the rod grade to your pumping parameters.

Every well has unique characteristics. By considering the criteria above - size, strength, and environment – and collaborating with Vigor, the optimal rod series to maximize pumping unit effectiveness while minimizing maintenance disruptions can be determined. please
