Many types exist due to different fluid pressure, temperature, and physico-chemical properties necessitating varying control requirements. Gate, Choke, check, and Plug valve has the widest facility applications.
Types
(1) Gate Valve
Opening/closing fluid flows with low resistance, good sealing, unrestricted flow directions, and small actuation forces for their short structures.
Its stems have rising and non-rising types. Rising stems suit corrosive services while non-rising ones are mainly used in water pipes for low-pressure, non-corrosive media e.g.
Gate plate structures include wedge and parallel types.
Wedge plates have single and double gate variants. Parallel gates are often used in oil/gas transport systems and rarely in chemical plants.
(2) Choke Valve
Used for on/off. Compared to gate products, they have higher fluid resistance and operating torque but also have directional flow requirements.
◆Advantages :
(1) Less seal friction during opening/closing, increasing wear resistance.
(2) Lower opening height.
(3) It typically only has one seal surface, simplifying manufacturing and maintenance.
Per body configurations, it has inline, angle, and Y-type variants. Inline have the widest applications while angle globes are used for 90° flow direction changes.
(3) Check Valves
Also called a non-return or one-way valve, prevents reverse flow. Ensure the installed fluid flow direction matches the valve arrow. Many types exist with differences between manufacturers, but they are structurally divided into lift and swing types. Lift checks include single and double flap variants.
(4) Plug valve
It has low fluid resistance, good sealing, long service life, and bidirectional sealing suitability for highly hazardous materials. However, they have higher operating torques and prices. Their non-accumulating cavities avoid contamination in batch facilities. Hence, it is necessitated in some applications.

Materials
Valve materials include body, internals, gaskets, packing and fasteners, etc. This section introduces typical valve body materials comprising cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel.
(1) Cast Iron
Gray cast iron (A126-2B) is typically used in low-pressure valve and is not recommended for process pipes. Nodular cast iron (A395) has better strength and toughness than gray cast iron.
(2) Carbon Steel
The most common carbon steel valve materials are A216-WCB (casting) and A105 (forging). Note carbon steel service above 400°C significantly shortens valve life. For low-temperature services, common materials are A352-LCB (casting) and A350-LF2 (forging).
(3) Austenitic Stainless Steel
Austenitic stainless steels are typically used in corrosive services or cryogenic conditions e.g. castings - A351-CF8, A351-CF8M, A351-CF3, A351-CF3M and forgings - A182-F304, A182-F316, A182-F304L, A182-F316L.
(4) Alloy Steel
For low-temperature services, A352-LC3 (casting) and A350-LF3 (forging) is typically used while A217-WC6 (casting), A182-F11 (forging), and A217-WC9 (casting), A182-F22 (forging) are used for high-temperature services. Since WC9 and F22 contain more Cr and Mo than 1-1/4Cr-1/2Mo WC6 and F11, they offer better creep resistance at high temperatures.
