The most critical piece of equipment is the blowout preventer (BOP). Common BOPs are primarily of two types: Annular BOPs and Ram BOPs.

Annular Blowout Preventers

The annular BOP is so named because of its doughnut-shaped sealing element. It is also called a spherical preventer or full-bore preventer. Based on the packing element shape, they can be classified as:

Functions of Annular BOPs

1) When drill pipe is present, it can seal the annular space between the pipe and wellbore

4) With a choke/accumulator assist, it enables stripping operations on premium threads

Basic Components of a Blowout Preventer System

A blowout preventer system comprises all the equipment, specialized tools, and manifolds required for implementing oil and gas well pressure control. The basic components should include:

The rated working pressure of any BOP system is determined by the component with the lowest pressure rating in that assembly. This could be the casing, casing head, BOP, or any other pressure-containing component.

The casing burst strength and fracture pressure of the open hole section below the casing shoe are the deciding factors for the system's rated working pressure.
