Kill Manifold is a necessary equipment in a well control system to pump drilling fluid into well or inject the water into the wellhead. One end of the manifold is connected to the drilling spool and another end is connected to the pump. In case of an increase in the wellhead pressure, it can provide a means of pumping heavy drilling fluid into the well to balance bottom hole pressure so that well kick and blowout can be prevented.

It consists of a check valve, gate valve, pressure gauges, and line pipes.

 

Kill Manifold Functions

(1) When the wellhead is totally closed in with a visually impaired smash, the weighty penetrating liquid is effectively siphoned downhole through the kill complex to complete well-killing tasks.

(2) When a blowout has occurred, water is forcibly injected downhole through the manifold to prevent combustion and fire.

(3) When the blowout is on fire, firefighting chemicals are forcibly pumped downhole through the manifold to aid in extinguishing the fire.

Maximum working pressure of choke and kill manifolds

The maximum working pressures are divided into 5 classes: 14MPa, 21MPa, 35MPa, 70MPa and 105MPa.

The pressure rating installed on the wellsite must be consistent with that of the blowout preventer stack. Generally, the manifold pressure rating is determined according to the pressure rating of the BOP stack during the last spudding operation.

Nominal diameters

Kill Manifold

The nominal diameter of a manifold refers to the internal diameter of the piping. The connecting pipes between the wellhead cross and the 5-way choke manifold generally shall not be less than 76mm in nominal diameter, but for 14MPa manifolds, 50mm can be allowed; when large gas flow is expected during drilling operations, the diameter shall not be less than 102mm.

The connecting pipes upstream and downstream of the choke valve shall not be less than 50mm in nominal diameter; the bleed-off line shall not be less than 78mm.

The nominal diameter shall generally be no less than 50mm. The connecting pipes between the wellhead cross and the manifold shall generally be no less than 52mm in nominal diameter.

Applications

1. Well Killing - Primary use is for well killing by pumping weighted mud to regain control and prevent blowouts when well kicks occur. Kill fluid is pumped through the kill line and valves to circulate out kicks, stabilize the well, and restore proper pressure balance. Precise flow control is enabled by the choke and check valves.

2. Emergency Well Control - In the event of blowouts, it allows the pumping of heavy mud or other kill fluids to help contain and kill the well. Fluids are forced down the kill line directly into the wellbore, even with BOPs closed.

3. Drilling Operations - During normal drilling, it provides a separate circulating system to complement the main mud pumps. This allows pumping mud, pills, spacers, and other fluids directly to the bottom hole for improved hole cleaning, without interrupting main circulation.

4. Managed Pressure Drilling - MPD methods, including underbalanced drilling, is used for accurate fine-tuning of back pressure. Choke valves maintain precise circulating friction and equivalent circulating density.

5. Snubbing Operations - they assist in fluid control when tripping pipe in and out of live wells under pressure. Circulation helps manage swab/surge pressures through the stripper.

6. Maintenance & Testing - Used to pump fluids during BOP pressure testing, bleed off lines, lubricate BOP rams/annulars, and pump maintenance chemicals. Provides access points for fluid lines.

7. Commissioning & Abandonment - Important during pre-production well testing and final abandonment to safely manage pressures and circulate fluids. Provides backup well control.
