Drilling Stabilizer Types

Feb 27, 2024

Drilling stabilizers are an important component of the bottom hole assembly (BHA) used in oil and gas drilling operations. They help center the drill string in the wellbore, reduce vibration, and improve drilling efficiency. There are several types of Drilling stabilizers that serve different purposes.

①Integral Spiral Blade Stabilizer

The integral spiral blade stabilizer is manufactured as part of the drill collar, with spiral blades welded directly onto the outside diameter of the pipe. The blades are angled to facilitate smooth passage through tight spots and prevent the pipe from sticking while drilling.

Integral blade stabilizers provide robust stabilization force to maintain centerline trajectory. They are suitable for high dogleg severity well profiles. The angled blades also enhance particle suspension when drilling highly deviated and horizontal wells.

②Replaceable Sleeve Stabilizer

As the name suggests, replaceable sleeve stabilizers consist of an outer sleeve that fits over the drill collar. The sleeve contains angled hard-faced blades that provide stabilization.

When the blades become worn, the sleeve can be replaced without needing to replace the entire drill collar. This makes them economical and efficient. Replaceable sleeve stabilizers are a versatile option suitable for different drilling applications.

They provide good concentricity through the build section and are useful for drilling in interbedded formations. The sleeves can also be customized with different blade arrangements and hardness to suit specific drilling requirements.

③Float Valve Stabilizer

The float valve stabilizer contains an internal check valve that opens when the flow is downwards and closes when the flow is reversed. This allows drilled cuttings to pass upwards through the drill string while preventing flow back into the bit.

Float valve stabilizers are positioned directly above the drill bit. They keep cuttings away from the bit face and create a fast-moving slurry to improve hole cleaning. This leads to an increased rate of penetration.

They are essential for efficient drilling in high-angle and horizontal wells where cuttings removal is challenging due to gravity. Float valve stabilization also reduces costly back reaming requirements in these complex well trajectories.

④ Non-rotating Stabilizer

As the name suggests, non-rotating stabilizers do not rotate along with the drill string. They are fixed in place within the BHA.

Non-rotating stabilizers provide a fulcrum point to build angle in directional drilling. Having a stationary stabilization point allows the bit to be pointed in the desired trajectory.

They are useful for drilling dogleg sections and initiating doglegs in a planned well profile. Non-rotating stabilizers placed close to the bit also enhance directional control in rotary steerable system drilling.

⑤Spherical Stabilizer

Spherical stabilizers contain spherical balls enclosed inside an outer housing. As drilling fluid passes through, the balls are pushed outwards to contact the wellbore walls. This provides stabilization and prevents vibration.

The main advantage of spherical stabilizers is that the stabilization force adjusts automatically based on wellbore diameter. In undergage holes, the balls extend further to provide more stabilization.

This self-adjusting capability makes spherical stabilizers ideal for wells with variable diameter. They perform well across build and tangent sections.

⑥Non-Magnetic Stabilizer

Non-magnetic stabilizers are constructed from non-magnetic materials such as aluminum and Monel. They do not interfere with directional surveys and measurement tools used for geosteering.

Positioning non-magnetic stabilizers near measurement equipment provides a stabilized platform for accurate readings. This improves directional control and placement accuracy when drilling directional and horizontal wells.

Non-magnetic stabilizers are an essential component of drilling assemblies used with magnetic multi-shot surveys and continuous inclination measurement tools. They allow precise wellbore positioning.

Conclusion

Stabilizers are a critical BHA component for optimal drilling performance. Various drilling stabilizer types are available, with the optimal selection dependent on the specific drilling application and well design.
