Non-magnetic drill collar Material

With the rapid development of our country's economy, the country's demand for petroleum energy is increasing, and oil drilling is getting deeper and deeper. Up to now, adjustment wells, directional wells, horizontal wells, deep wells, ultra-deep wells, and small borehole drilling have been formed, branch wells, extended reach wells, etc., the underground environment is more severe, and the requirements for non-magnetic drill collar materials are getting higher and higher. Given this situation, we will briefly discuss the performance and application of downhole drilling tool materials.

(1) W1813N/N1310 high nitrogen chromium manganese stainless steel

 

Tensile strength: σb (MPa): ≥1000

Yield strength: σs (MPa): ≥630-700

Relative magnetic permeability: 1.0027

Domestic non-magnetic stainless steel has poor corrosion resistance in complex underground environments

(2) 15-15HS MAX high nitrogen steel (non-magnetic steel)

 

Physical properties:

Density: 7750 kg/m3

Average specific heat: 26 to 116°C 0.4937 KJ/kg/K

Average thermal expansion coefficient: 25 to 550°C 19.3 x 10-6 cm/cm/°C

Thermal conductivity: 23°C 13.77W/m/K, 400°C 19.17W/m/K

Elastic modulus (E): 191 000 MPa

Resistivity: 732.9 microohm-mm at 21°C

Magnetic characteristics:

15-15HS MAX is basically non-magnetic in the annealed and hot-processed state;

The magnetic permeability of hot-processed materials is less than 1.01 when measured with Severn magnetic weakening instrument;

ASTM A342 (magnetic field strength 200 Oersted): 1.002.

15-15HS MAX is nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel. It can be used in the oil and gas industry, such as non-magnetic drill collars, stabilizers, and measurement while drilling (MWD) sheaths, especially where high-strength stainless steel with a yield strength of at least 966MPa is required.

(3) P530/P550 non-magnetic stainless steel imported from Austria

 

Tensile strength: σb (MPa): ≥1035

Yield strength: σs (MPa): ≥965

Elongation δ5(%): ≥20

Hardness: ≥330HB

Impact power Akv(J): ≥150

Relative magnetic permeability: ≤1.00084

The pitting corrosion resistance equivalent of domestic non-magnetic stainless steel is generally more than 20, while the PRE of P550 is generally above 30. Someone has done experiments: the service life of non-magnetic stainless steel with PRE 20 is 1 year (serious corrosion), while non-magnetic stainless steel with PRE 30 or above has only slight corrosion after 8 years of use.
