How Many Types of API Couplings Are There?

May 24, 2024

When it comes to couplings for oil country tubular goods like casing and tubing, the American Petroleum Institute's API 5CT specification is the definitive standard followed in the industry. This spec covers a range of types designed to meet different well requirements.

Regular Couplings

The most basic type is the regular coupling. These have outer diameters conforming to the API tables for the given pipe size and weight. The ends are cut squarely, and the bearing surfaces have rounded or chamfered edges to avoid sharp transitions that could initiate cracks. However, the bearing width cannot be excessively reduced as it needs to adequately support the pipe string weight.

While simple in design, they are suitable for straight, vertical casing strings under typical temperature and pressure conditions. Their main advantages are ease of make-up and low cost.

Upset Couplings

For added strength and versatility, upset or thickened wall couplings are widely used, especially in tubing strings. As the name suggests, these products have an increased wall thickness compared to the pipe body they are joining. There are two key upset types:

1) Buttress (BTC) - Used for casing, the ID matches the pipe body.

2) Externally Upset (EUE) - Used for tubing, the OD is enlarged, creating a thickened section.

The upset geometry significantly improves the its resistance to bending, tensile and compression loads. EUE couplings are particularly advantageous for tubing due to the tapered thread connection into the its thickened section.

API 5CT provides comprehensive requirements for upset products dimensions, material properties, testing, markings and more to ensure integrity. Color banding is also mandated for certain grades.

Combination and Reducer Couplings

When joining different pipe sizes or transitioning from one thread form to another, combination and reducer types come into play. Combination products allow connecting pipes with distinct thread types but the same OD. Reducer products enable a diameter transition while optionally changing the thread form as well.

Designing these types requires careful consideration of minimum wall thicknesses and lengths to properly accommodate the specified threads and diameters without compromising strength. Manufacturing processes like hot upsetting may also be involved.

Tapered Tubing Couplings

When specified, a tapered or conical thread form can be used on tubing couplings as an alternative to straight threads. The taper provides a wedging effect that can enhance sealability and structural robustness. However, make-up techniques require closer attention compared to straight threads.

API 5CT covers the thread taper angles, clearances and dimensional specifics to guarantee fit-up and functionality with premium tubing connections featuring this design.

◆Material Qualifications

Regardless of type, API 5CT mandates rigorous material requirements be fulfilled based on the Grade being used - from metallurgy and heat treatment to mechanical properties like tensile, impact, sour gas resistance and more. This helps ensure the products can withstand the anticipated well stresses while maintaining a sufficient safety factor.

◆Marking and Certification

A key aspect addressed by the API standard is the requirement for clear and permanent marking on each coupling for traceability purposes. Quality certifications are also required to verify that the products were manufactured per the specification under a Quality Management System with supporting documentation.

◆Additional Protections

To qualify for more stringent PSL (Product Specification Level) certifications like PSL-2 or PSL-3, couplings need third-party monitoring during production and witness of test samples. This provides an extra layer of quality control and assurance for critical applications.

As you can see, the API 5CT standard covers a diverse range of coupling configurations to meet virtually any casing or tubing need. Leveraging the right technology, strictly adhering to material and dimensional requirements, and implementing proper make-up practices are all vital for delivering a robust, high-integrity tubular string.
