Non-Rotating Casing Brusher Hydraulics and Debris Transport

Oct 15, 2026

Cleaning a casing wall is a hydraulics problem as much as a mechanical one. A brush that scrubs well but blocks circulation leaves the debris it has just removed sitting on the low side of the hole, where the completion string will push it back into the interval. The non-rotating casing brusher is designed around that trade-off: enough brush contact to remove bonded material, and enough bypass area to keep fluid moving fast enough to carry the debris out.

Brush Geometry and the Bypass Problem

The tool is built on a single-piece mandrel carrying non-rotating stabilizers and dual offset brush sleeves, which together give full 360-degree coverage of the casing inner wall. Dual offset sleeves matter because they provide redundant contact: if one row of bristles wears or deflects, the second still touches the wall. The bypass area is deliberately generous, and published figures keep circulation above 8 barrels per minute during cleaning, because the flow path past the brush is what transports cement fragments, mill scale and perforation burrs to surface instead of letting them settle behind the tool. Three debris classes are targeted:

Cement sheath and hardened mud left behind after displacement

Mill scale and rust from the casing manufacturing process

Perforation burrs, which are the debris most likely to damage elastomeric seals in the completion

Annular Velocity and Turbulent Cleaning

Cleaning efficiency depends on the flow regime at the casing wall. Laminar flow will not lift a cutting bed off the low side of a deviated section, so the tool is specified to rotate at up to 150 RPM, which generates the turbulence needed to re-suspend settled solids while the bristles work on what is bonded. Guidance for deviated wells is to reciprocate the string by at least one joint at intervals and to hold annular velocity in the range of 135 to 150 feet per minute. Rotation and reciprocation can be run together because the brush sleeve does not turn with the string, which is the whole point of the non-rotating layout.

Non-Rotating Casing Brusher in Deviated Sections

Extended-reach wells are where the design earns its place. Self-centralizing stabilizers keep brush-to-casing contact force consistent regardless of deviation, so the cleaning action in a lateral beyond 3,000 meters matches the action in a vertical section. Because the sleeve stays stationary against the casing while the string rotates, an operator can rotate and reciprocate at the same time without abrading the casing wall - a combination that is not available with a conventional rotating scraper, where every revolution of the string is a revolution of the blades against the casing, and where the wear accumulates over the length of the interval.

Bristle Material and Temperature Limit

Brush bristles are wear-resistant alloy steel wire selected for chemical resistance to acids and completion brines, so the tool can be run through acid treatments and through the completion fluid without the brush degrading mid-job. The assembly is rated to 482 degrees Fahrenheit, about 250 degrees Celsius, which puts it in the HPHT cleaning class. Sizes cover 6.625 inches to 9.875 inches casing. The brush assembly is field-serviceable with basic hand tools, so a worn set can be swapped at the rig site and the tool returned to the string without a trip to a service facility.

Running the Non-Rotating Casing Brusher in a Single BHA

The tool is normally run with a non-rotating scraper, a debris magnet and circulation subs in one bottomhole assembly. That ordering matters: the scraper removes what is bonded, the brush removes what remains, and the magnet captures what neither can lift. Combining all three in a single run removes a dedicated scraper trip, which is where most of the time saving comes from on a multi-well campaign - commonly 6 to 8 hours per well - and it is the reason pre-completion clean-up is increasingly specified as one assembly rather than as three separate runs.

Cleaning only counts if the debris leaves the hole. A non-rotating casing brusher with dual offset sleeves, circulation held above 8 barrels per minute and rotation to 150 RPM cleans and transports in the same pass, without wearing the casing it is cleaning.
