On most completion jobs the scraper run is treated as a formality until a packer fails to hold or a gauge cutter comes back with cement packed into its blades. The non-rotating casing scraper exists because that formality is where the wellbore is actually prepared: cement sheath, mill scale, hardened drilling fluid and perforation burrs all have to come off the inner wall before anything with an elastomer goes in the hole. Getting that step wrong moves the problem to a more expensive part of the program.
How a Non-Rotating Casing Scraper Works
The tool has a one-piece body that turns with the drill string while the stabiliser and scraper assembly stay still against the casing. Blades are spring-loaded outward and ride the wall, so cleaning happens through reciprocation rather than through rotation. That distinction matters on a rig where the string is already being rotated for hole conditioning: a conventional scraper drags its blades around the wall and removes casing metal along with the deposits. The non-rotating arrangement keeps the cutting action radial, and because there are no external nuts or bolts on the body, nothing can work loose and drop into the hole.
Sizes and Connections for Common Casing Strings
The range covers 6-5/8 inches through 9-7/8 inches, which is where most intermediate and production strings sit. Tool joint outside diameter runs from 4-3/4 inches on the smaller bodies to 6-1/2 inches on the 9-5/8 inch size, with a through bore of 1-1/2 inches to 2-5/8 inches. The 6-5/8 inch tool scrapes a range of 5.63 to 6.57 inches and drifts at 5.55 inches, so it will pass a string that has been drifted to spec. Top and bottom connections are 3-1/2 inch IF (NC38) up to the 7 inch size and 4-1/2 inch IF (NC50) above it, which lets the tool go in on the same string as the completion. Weight coverage is quoted per casing size, for example 24 to 32 lb/ft on the 6-5/8 inch body and 32.3 to 64.9 lb/ft on the 9-5/8 inch body, because the blade reach has to suit the wall that is actually in the hole.
Temperature and Fluid Limits on the Rig
Standard bodies cover routine completion work, and a high-temperature variant is rated from 392 to 482 degrees F for steam and geothermal wells where elastomer seals would fail. The body is machined from high-strength steel and is intended to survive acid and chemical exposure during a stimulation job, so a scraper run before an acid treatment does not leave the tool as the weak point in the string. Bypass area is deliberately large; a scraper that chokes circulation turns a cleaning run into a stuck-pipe event.
Running the Scraper Before the Completion String
The tool goes in below the drill string and is worked across the interval with slow reciprocation, one pass per stand. Two details decide the result: the blades need a full stroke through every collar, and the string needs circulation on the way down so cuttings are lifted rather than packed off around the tool.
Reciprocate through each collar rather than rotating across it.
Circulate at a rate that lifts debris while the scraper is working.
Pull a gauge cutter after the run to confirm the drift.
Non-Rotating Casing Scraper Selection Checks
Three checks catch most selection errors. Confirm the casing weight range, because wall thickness changes the drift and therefore the blade clearance. Confirm the connection matches the string that will actually carry the tool, not the one in the drilling program. Confirm the temperature rating against the bottomhole condition rather than the surface line temperature. A scraper that is right on paper but one size off in drift will either fail to clean or fail to pass, and the crew will find out at the packer. On a long interval, plan two passes rather than one: the first cuts the heavy deposits, the second brings the wall to a consistent gauge, and the second pass is also the one that shows whether the first actually worked.
Cleaning a casing string is unglamorous work, but it is the step that decides whether the completion lands. A non-rotating casing scraper that matches the drift, the connection and the temperature does that work without spending casing wall to do it.
