Precautions for Drill pipe Usage

Aug 10, 2024

1. Before use, drill pipes should be neatly arranged on a mobile rack at least 0.3m above the ground with sufficient support blocks. This prevents rust and corrosion from water, moisture, soil, etc. The pipe racks should be parallel and on the same level to prevent bending or deformation. Pipes at both ends of the rack should be secured with chocks to prevent rolling or falling.

2. For new drill pipes, it's recommended to perform two make-and-break operations at a torque slightly lower than the specified value. After confirming that the joint threads and sealing surfaces are intact, apply thread compound thoroughly and evenly, then tighten the joint threads to the specified torque before use. This break-in procedure helps strengthen the surface hardness of the threads, enhances their anti-galling properties, and extends their service life.

3. Before connecting drill pipes, thoroughly clean both pin and box ends and apply thread compound (which cannot be substituted with other waste oils or inferior pressure oils) to prevent premature wear or damage. Additionally, the pre-tightening force should be controlled within 15 MPa to avoid difficulties in breaking out. Avoid using heat to loosen joints as it reduces their mechanical properties (especially the box end), affecting service life. Moreover, insufficient pre-tightening can cause thread connection movement, resulting in mutual grinding of thread crests, formation of ridges on the sides, leading to thread damage or galling. Inadequate pre-tightening of the box shoulder can cause fatigue fractures at the root of the pin thread. Under high-pressure fluid action, the box end may be penetrated, causing erosion and potentially leading to longitudinal cracks.

4. Pay attention to cleaning the water courses to prevent blockages that could cause pressure build-up in the mud system.

5. Regularly inspect all parts for wear. If abnormal wear is detected, promptly identify the cause:

(1) Determine if sharp, hard substances in the borehole are scratching the drill pipes;

(2) Assess if the rig's guide system is causing scratches.

For trenchless drilling machine pipes, exercise caution when using pipes with spiral scratches deeper than 1mm extending over one full turn on the pipe body. This prevents pipe breakage during operation, avoiding greater losses. If there is localized damage to the thread form (about 1-2 threads, 10mm in length), repair it promptly before further use.

6. Avoid using pipe wrenches or vise grips on any part of the drill pipe body to prevent slip damage from the jaws, which would reduce their service life.
