Components of Well control equipment

①Blowout Preventer (BOP) Stack (also known as Wellhead Assembly):

The BOP stack, primarily consisting of hydraulic BOPs, is also referred to as the drilling wellhead assembly. It mainly includes: a hydraulic BOP stack, manual locking device, casing head (transition flange), and drilling cross.

②Control System:

The control system for hydraulic BOPs primarily includes a remote control panel, a driller's control panel, and auxiliary remote control panel.

③Well Control Manifold:

The well control manifold, centered around the choke and kill manifold, mainly includes: choke manifold, kill manifold, hydraulic choke valve control box, BOP manifold, bleed-off manifold, water injection line, fire extinguishing system, reverse circulation line, and ignition device.

④Inside Blowout Prevention Tools:

Inside blowout prevention tools for the drill string mainly include drill string float valves (dart-type, ball-type, drop-in, and stab-in check valves), Kelly cock valves (upper and lower), and drill string inside BOP.

⑤ Monitoring Instruments:

Instruments primarily used for monitoring and predicting abnormal formation pressure include: drilling fluid return temperature monitor, mud density monitor, drilling fluid return flow meter, mud pit level indicator, fluid level indicator during tripping, pump stroke counter, and other parameter monitoring and alarm devices.

⑥Auxiliary Equipment:

Auxiliary equipment for mud weight adjustment, gas removal, and well filling during well control operations mainly includes: mud weight-up equipment, mud/gas separator, atmospheric or vacuum degasser, and automatic mud bucket for tripping operations.

⑦Special Equipment:

Special equipment for handling well blowouts and special operations mainly includes: snubbing unit for forced tripping under pressure, rotating control device (rotating BOP), firefighting equipment, and wellhead assembly/disassembly tools.

Functions of Well control equipment

As a crucial means for safe operations, well control equipment should possess the following functions:

● Timely and accurate monitoring and prediction of kicks and blowouts during normal drilling, tripping, and other non-drilling operations.

● Rapid and effective control of the wellhead in the event of a kick, flow, or blowout, regulating the release of wellbore fluids (drilling mud, oil, gas, water). Ability to promptly pump in high-density drilling fluid to kill the well and restore and re-establish bottom hole pressure balance.

● Provision of basic conditions for effectively handling accidents in case of a blowout, loss of well control, or even fire.

● Capability to run or pull pipe strings and perform cementing operations without well control issues, and meet special requirements such as lost circulation control while preventing blowouts.

Well control equipment is a key means of implementing pressure control in oil and gas wells, a reliable guarantee for safe drilling, and an indispensable part of drilling equipment.

● Monitoring and prediction: Through well monitoring and alarm systems, early signs of a blowout can be detected promptly, allowing for quick implementation of control measures.

● Blowout prevention: Maintaining wellbore hydrostatic pressure slightly higher than formation pressure to prevent conditions conducive to kicks and blowouts.

● Blowout control: In the event of a kick or blowout, quickly shutting in the well to control the wellhead, then initiating circulation to remove the influx and kill the well, re-establishing pressure balance in the oil and gas well.

● Handling complex situations: Conducting firefighting and emergency response operations in cases of loss of well control in oil and gas wells.
