What is the difference between casing head and casing spool?

In the oil and gas industry, wellhead equipment plays a crucial role in maintaining well integrity and control. Two essential components of wellhead assemblies are casing heads and casing spools. While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they serve distinct purposes in wellhead design.

What Is Casing head?

 

A casing head is the lowermost component of a wellhead assembly. It's typically installed on top of the surface casing and serves as the foundation for the entire wellhead system. Its primary functions include:

①Supporting the weight of subsequent casing strings

②Providing a seal between the surface casing and the next casing string

③Offering side outlets for well control operations

④Serving as a base for mounting blowout preventers (BOPs) during drilling operations

They are designed to withstand high pressures and can be equipped with various types of hangers to suspend inner casing strings. They are usually rated for the highest anticipated wellbore pressure and are critical for maintaining well control throughout the life of the well.

What Is Casing Spool?

 

A casing spool, on the other hand, is an intermediate component in a wellhead assembly. It's installed above the casing head and below the tubing head when multiple casing strings are required. The main functions of a casing spool include:

①Supporting and sealing additional casing strings

②Providing annular access between casing strings

③Allowing for the suspension of inner casing strings using casing hangers

④Facilitating wellhead growth as the well is drilled deeper

Casing spools are modular in nature, allowing for the addition of multiple spools as the well is drilled to its total depth. Each spool corresponds to a specific casing string and is designed to manage the pressure differentials between casing annuli.

Key Differences:

 

①Position in Wellhead Assembly:

Casing head: Lowermost component, directly on top of the surface casing.

Casing spool: Intermediate component, installed above the casing head or another casing spool.

②Primary Function:

The Former: Provides the foundation for the wellhead system and supports the entire casing load.

The Latter: Supports individual inner casing strings and manages annular pressures.

③Installation Timing:

The Former: Installed early in the well construction process, typically after setting the surface casing.

The Latter: Added as needed during drilling operations, corresponding to each subsequent casing string.

④Pressure Ratings:

The Former: Generally rated for the highest anticipated wellbore pressure.

The Latter: May have varying pressure ratings depending on the depth and pressure regime of the corresponding casing string.

⑤Design Flexibility:

The Former: Typically a more robust, singular design to accommodate various well scenarios.

The Latter: More modular in nature, allowing for customization based on specific well requirements.
