Description
- Landing Nipples are installed within the production tubing string to ensure that downhole tools such as plugs, safety valves, and flow control devices can be accurately located and positioned. They provide a means to securely land and lock these tools at specific depths within the well.
- It features an internal profile that acts as a locating and orienting guide for the tools being run. This profile mates with a corresponding outer profile on the tool, ensuring it lands in the correct position and orientation. Once located, the nipple has a locking groove that allows the tool's locking mechanism (typically a collet or slips) to engage and secure it in place.
- It incorporate sealing bores that enable a pressure-tight seal to be made between the landed tool and the nipple's inner diameter. This sealing ability is crucial for isolating pressure from above or below the tool, enabling functions like shut-in, testing, or flow control.

Types of Landing Nipples

① X-Type: This configuration is commonly used in applications involving standard weight tubing where moderate pressure differentials are expected. The X-Type profile is designed to provide a reliable and secure landing point for the corresponding lock mandrels.
② XN-Type: The XN profile features an angled shoulder as opposed to the square shoulder of the selective types. This design requires a "no go" shoulder of an adapter sub made up at the bottom of the lock to make contact with a bore restriction in the "no go" nipple, ensuring the lock mandrel is securely locked in place.
③ R-Type: Typically utilized with heavy weight tubing, the R-Type Nipple is designed to handle higher pressure differentials compared to the X-Type. It offers a robust solution for securing downhole tools in more demanding well conditions.
④ RN-Type: Similar to the XN profile, the RN-Type Landing Nipple features an angled shoulder for enhanced locking capabilities. It is designed for use in situations where a high level of security is required to maintain the position of the downhole tools, especially in heavier tubing applications.

When working, the braking ratchet of the lock mandrel stretches out into its groove. Blanking plugs, flow control devices and testing instruments can be hung below the lock mandrel.
