Sliding Sleeve is a full-opening device with an inner sleeve that can be opened or closed using standard slackline methods. A three-position collet lock helps keep the sleeve in a full-open, equalizing, or full-closed position. Equalizing ports in the inner sleeve are designed to allow pressure differential between the tubing and casing annulus to equipment while shifting into the fully open or closed position. This sleeve enables the communication between the tubing and tubing/casing annulus. Any number of circulation equipment pieces can be run in a single tubing string, and all can be opened or closed on a single slackline trip. Individual sleeves can also be opened or closed selectively as needed.

Features

 

①Selective Production from Multizone Wells

The Sliding Sleeve separation tool enables flow from the casing and tubing annulus through an open Sliding Sleeve, directing it up the production tubing while isolating the tubing just below the sleeve. This setup facilitates the alternating production of two zones (separated by packers) without mixing.

②Shifting with Wireline, Coiled Tubing (CT), or Intervention less Operations

A shifting tool, along with wireline or CT, is utilized to open or close the sleeve. Alternatively, an external shroud can be deployed in the closed position while the inner sleeve remains open. The shroud is hydraulically sheared with annular pressure to establish flow communication. Heavyweight mud can be moved from the annulus to the tubing without needing a slickline or CT trip to open the sleeve. Standard slickline or CT techniques are then employed to close the sleeve.

 

Function

 

Sliding Sleeves can connect or isolate the production tubing from the annulus through the interaction between the inner and outer sleeves. Their primary functions include:

①Inducing flow after well completion

②Circulating and pressurizing the well

③Gas lift operations

④Setting and retrieving jet pumps

⑤Selective production, layer testing, and enhanced injection in multi-zone wells

⑥Mixed-layer production

⑦Deploying plugs to shut in the well or pressure testing the tubing

⑧Circulating chemical agents for corrosion prevention

 

Working Principles

 

The Sliding Sleeve operates by moving the inner sleeve to open or close the passage between the tubing and the annular space. When the inner sleeve's port aligns with the passage in the sleeve body, the sleeve is open. When misaligned, the sleeve closes. its upper part features a working cylinder, which secures the downhole flow control devices associated with the sleeve. Each end of the inner sleeve has a sealing face that works with the sealing packing of downhole devices to ensure a proper seal.

The activation tool is connected below the main tool string for wireline operations, allowing for the opening and closing of the downhole Sliding Sleeve. Some methods involve downward impact to move the sleeve down and open it, while others require upward impact to move the inner sleeve up and achieve the same result.
