The Subsurface sucker rod pump typically consists of a barrel, plunger, standing valve, and traveling valve. The barrel houses the plunger, which moves up and down inside the barrel in a reciprocating motion, creating suction to draw fluid into the pump.
The standing valve, located at the bottom of the pump assembly, functions as a one-way check valve that allows fluid to enter the barrel while preventing it from flowing back into the reservoir. The traveling valve, positioned on the plunger, also acts as a one-way check valve, allowing fluid to flow upward through the pump as the plunger moves upwards.

Structure of rod pump
1. Piston with traveling valve.
2. Inner working cylinder with fixed valve.
3. Conical lock buckle.
4. Suspended to the lower end of the oil pipe outside the working tube.
5. Types: Depending on the wall thickness of the barrel, it can be classified as either a thin wall rod pump or a thick wall rod pump.
Working Principle of sucker rod pump
When the Plunger goes up, the travelling ball seat opens and liquid enters the pump;
when the plunger goes down, the stationary ball seat opens, and liquid in the pump enters the tubing.
As the plunger continuously makes reciprocating movements up and down, the stationary valve and travelling valve open and shut alternatively and the pump barrel repeatedly finishes absorbing and draining liquid action to make the liquid string in the tubing rising continuously and discharge into the pipeline on the wellhead.
Applications
1. Vertical wells: it is the most common type of artificial lift used in vertical wells.
2. Horizontal wells.
3. Deviated wells: They can also be used in deviated wells, but they require special modifications to the pump and rod assembly.
