Choke Valve

Common types of choke valves used with X mas trees include orifice, needle, labyrinth, and cage types. Among these, needle chokes and cage chokes are the most frequently used.

A choke is a component of the Christmas tree used to control the well flow rate. It's installed between the wing valve and the production line. chokes can also control gas injection rates in gas-lift wells and water injection rates in water injection wells. As a throttling element, chokes control the well's production pressure differential by changing chokes with different orifice diameters. they are made of heat-treated high-carbon alloy steel. Orifice diameters range from 2-20mm, with increments of 0.5mm per size.

There are two types of chokes: fixed and adjustable. Fixed chokes contain replaceable parts with fixed small holes for throttling. Adjustable chokes have an externally controlled variable-area orifice and a corresponding orifice area indicator. The throttling holes in adjustable chokes are distributed on a tubular part, with an outer sleeve moving axially to cover or uncover holes, thus changing the flow area.

Gate Valve

Gate valves are primarily used in oil and gas drilling and completion well control equipment, serving to open or shut off oil and gas passages. They consist of a handwheel, valve stem, gate, seat, bonnet, and valve body assembly.

A gate valve is a type of valve where the closing element (gate) moves perpendicular to the flow direction. In contrast, a plug valve has a rotating closing element (plug), which can be cylindrical, conical, or spherical. Gate valves play a crucial role in wellhead control.

Surface Safety Valve

The surface safety valve works in conjunction with the surface safety control system. It can automatically shut in the well in various abnormal situations, cutting off the gas source in emergencies.

Check Valve

A check valve, also known as a non-return valve, allows fluid to flow freely in only one direction. Check valves have a mechanism that automatically prevents fluid from flowing in the reverse direction. On a X mas trees, check valves are typically installed between the wing valve and the choke.

While some oil well X mas trees don't have check valves, they are generally installed on water injection well Christmas trees. Check valve types include in-line, swing, lift, and butterfly designs. They can be full-bore or reduced-bore, with common end connections including flanged and clamp-on styles.
