API 5CT Casing Grade Selection for Sour Wells

Oct 28, 2026

Casing is the one tubular that cannot be changed out. It is cemented in place, it carries the well for its whole life, and the grade chosen at the planning stage is the grade that will be there when the well is on its third workover. API 5CT casing selection is therefore a load and corrosion exercise rather than a purchasing decision, and the two mistakes that recur are choosing a grade on collapse alone and ignoring the hardness limit in sour service.

Why API 5CT Casing Grade Decides String Life

The grade sets the yield and tensile strength, and therefore the wall that can carry the axial load, the burst from the reservoir and the collapse from the overburden. It also sets the hardness, which decides whether the steel is acceptable in H2S. A string designed only for burst will often be over-specified in strength and under-specified in chemistry, which is how a well passes a pressure test and fails a year later with a crack at a coupling. The coupling is part of the string, not an accessory, and its grade and hardness have to be ordered with the pipe.

Wall Thickness and Collapse Resistance

Sizes run from 4-1/2 inches to 20 inches, with wall thickness from 0.205 inches on the lightest 4-1/2 inch weight to 0.875 inches on the heaviest 5-1/2 inch weight. Collapse resistance rises steeply with wall thickness and with yield strength, but the same wall reduces the drift and raises the string weight that the rig has to handle. On a deep production string the design usually converges on the lightest wall that satisfies collapse at the shoe, because every extra pound per foot is carried by the top joint. A 7 inch 26 lb/ft casing with a 0.362 inch wall is a common production string, and moving to the next weight class adds wall and collapse margin at a cost the rig feels on every trip.

Sour Service and the 22 HRC Limit

Grades run H40, J55, K55, N80, N80Q, L80, C90, C95, T95, P110 and Q125, with stainless options including SS95, SS110, 9 percent chromium and 13 percent chromium. In sour service ISO 15156-3 limits hardness to 22 HRC maximum, which is why L80 13Cr is a common choice for CO2 and mild H2S: it meets the corrosion duty and stays inside the hardness limit. A higher-strength grade may be mechanically adequate and still be unacceptable in the same well. The 13 percent chromium grades also have limits on pH, chloride content and temperature, so the fluid analysis decides whether the alloy is suitable at all.

Threads and Make-Up on the Rig

API threads are STC, LTC, BTC and XL, plus proprietary premium connections. Round threads have a 1:16 taper with 8 threads per inch; buttress uses a 1:16 taper below 16 inches outside diameter and 1:12 above it, with 5 threads per inch. The thread choice follows the load: buttress carries more axial load than round thread in the same wall, and a premium connection is used where gas tightness matters more than cost. Running speed and tally control matter as much as the thread form: a joint that is stabbed too fast or made up short is a leak path regardless of the grade.

Confirm grade, wall and thread as one specification, not three.

Check the hardness certificate against the sour service limit.

Verify coupling make-up torque against the connection data sheet.

API 5CT Casing Ordering Checks

The ordering document is where most field problems start. State the outside diameter, the weight per foot, the wall thickness, the grade, the thread and the end finish, and confirm that the mill certificate matches. For a corrosive well, add the hardness limit and the standard it is measured against. For a string that will be drilled out or perforated, confirm the drift and the wall tolerance before the pipe leaves the yard. Inspect for storage damage at the rack, keep the threads protected until make-up, and reject any joint with a dent in the seal area rather than trying to dress it.

Casing is a one-time purchase that has to last the life of the well. Choose the grade against the load and the fluid together, and the string that goes in the hole is the string that stays fit for service.
