What are the Connection Types of Drill pipe?

Jul 28, 2024

Drill pipe connections play a crucial role in ensuring the integrity and efficiency of oil and gas drilling operations. These connections, referred to as tool joints, are designed to withstand the extreme pressures, temperatures, and stresses encountered during drilling.

①Common Drill pipe Connection Types

a) Internal Flush (IF): Characterized by a flush inner diameter, providing smooth fluid flow.

b) Full Hole (FH): Offers a larger inner diameter compared to IF connections.

c) Regular (REG): Features a standard thread profile and is widely used in the industry.

d) Full Hole FH: A variation of the FH connection with specific design features.

e) Extra Hole (XH): Provides an even larger inner diameter than FH connections.

Among these, IF and REG are the most commonly used in drilling operations, while FH, Full Hole FH, and XH are less frequently encountered in standard tool shops.

②Comparison of IF and REG Connections

◆Internal Flush (IF) Connections:

a)Thread count: 4 threads per inch

b)Thread characteristics: Relatively thicker threads

c)Taper: Smaller compared to REG

d)Size range: 2-3/8" to 4-1/2"

e)Advantages: Smooth inner bore, reduced turbulence in fluid flow

◆Regular (REG) Connections:

a)Thread count: 5 threads per inch

b)Thread characteristics: Relatively thinner threads

c)Taper: Larger compared to IF

d) Size range: Typically used for sizes larger than 4-1/2", up to 7-5/8"

e) Advantages: Greater tensile strength, suitable for larger diameter pipes

It's important to note that REG connections are not available for sizes above 7-5/8", where specialized connections are required.

③Connection Representation System

The industry uses a three-digit system to represent Drill pipe connections, providing quick and easy identification. For example:

310: 3-1/2" IF Box connection

410: 4-1/2" IF Box connection

411: 4-1/2" IF Pin connection

◆Breaking down the three-digit system:

First Digit (Size):

2 - 2-7/8"

3 - 3-1/2"

4 - 4-1/2"

5 - 5-1/2"

6 - 6-5/8"

7 - 7-5/8"

◆Second Digit (Connection Type):

1 - IF (Internal Flush)

2 - FH (Full Hole)

3 - REG (Regular)

Third Digit (Pin or Box):

0 - Box (female thread)

1 - Pin (male thread)

This system allows quick identification of connection specifications in the field.

④Additional Drill pipe Connection Types

While IF and REG are the most common, other connection types are used in specific applications:

a) BTC (Buttress Thread Connection): Offers high tensile strength and is resistant to jump-out.

b) MT (Modified Thread): A proprietary thread design with enhanced performance characteristics.

c) AMT (Advanced Modified Thread): An improved version of the MT connection.

d) HT55: A high-torque connection designed for demanding drilling conditions.

⑤Connections for Specialized Equipment

a) Motors: Commonly use 7-5/8" REG, 6-5/8" REG, 4-1/2" REG, and occasionally 4-1/2" IF.

b)Scrapers and Hydraulic Cutting Tools: Typically utilize REG connections for compatibility with standard drill strings.

◆Knowledge Extension: NC and IF Designations

The industry also uses NC (Numbered Connection) designations, which correspond to IF sizes:

- NC26: 2-3/8" IF

- NC31: 2-7/8" IF

- NC38 (311): 3-1/2" IF

- NC50 (411): 4-1/2" IF

These designations are based on API (American Petroleum Institute) standards. For instance:

◆NC38 (311) specifications:

- Outer diameter (body): 127mm

- Inner diameter: 57.2mm

- Length: 91.5mm

◆NC50 specifications:

- Outer diameter options: 171.4mm, 177.8mm, or 184.2mm

- Inner diameter options: 71.4mm or 57.2mm

Understanding these various connection types and their characteristics is crucial for ensuring proper equipment selection, compatibility, and safe drilling operations in the oil and gas industry.
