What is the Function of a Drill Collar?

Oct 31, 2023

Drill collars play a critical role in oil and gas drilling operations. today, Vigor will provide a detailed overview of what means drill collars, their key functions downhole, and how they contribute to drilling performance.

I. What Means Drill Collar?

A drill collar is a thick-walled, heavy tubular component that makes up the bottom portion of the drill string. It is positioned directly above the drill bit, which is between 30 to 90 feet long with a diameter larger than the drill pipe.

II.What is the Purpose of a Drill Collar?

Important purposes:

(1)Add weight to the drill bit - The heavy weight of collars provides "weight on bit" to increase penetration rate and drilling efficiency, especially in hard rock. More weight crushes and fractures formation more effectively.

(2)Stiffen the drill string - The thick walls give collars high flexural rigidity to resist the bending of the pipe. This maintains a vertical well profile and improves directional control.

(3)Prevent buckling - The added mass of collars lowers the risk of helical buckling of the drill string during operations.

(4)Stabilize the bottom hole assembly - Collars stabilize the bit and lower part of the drill string for maintained directional trajectory.

(5)Withstand drilling stresses - Collars withstand the axial, bending, and torsional stresses of drilling without failure.

(6)Resist drill string twisting - The stiffness resists twisting of the pipe and maintains smooth transfer of rotary power to the bit.

(7)Transmit hydraulic power- Fluids pumped through collars provide bit lubrication and cooling.

III.What does a drill collar do?

Drill collars have a number of critical duties that enable efficient drilling through diverse rock formations and challenging well trajectories.

(1)Hard Rock Formations

In granite, basalt, and other hard igneous or metamorphic formations, the heavy weight of the collar exerts extra "weight on bit" to crush tough rock and boost drill rates.

Recent deepwater offshore wells offshore Brazil and African basins have employed ultra-heavy collars to economize drilling of deep hard rock sections.

(2)Soft Rock Formations

In soft sedimentary rocks like shale or sandstone, the extreme weighting effect of collars is less significant. However, collars maintain verticality in straight-hole sections that may sag through poorly consolidated formations. Their stiffness also prevents pack-off and sticking when drilling reactive claystones.

Collars have become indispensable in the booming shale plays of North America. Their stabilization ensures smooth trajectories through alternating shale and limestone layers offshore Mexico too.

(3)Unstable or Caving Formations

Where formations fracture, swell, and slough easily, collars minimize wellbore breakouts. The stiff backbone resists localized collapse loads. In underbalanced air or foam drilling, hole integrity is maintained.

Geothermal drilling through fractured volcanic and rainforest environments shows the anti-caving benefits of collars worldwide. Minimizing wall failures is crucial.

(4)Directional, ERD, and Horizontal Wells

In deviated, extended reach and horizontal wells, collars provide critical weight closest to the bit for torque, drag and vibration reduction. Their gravity vector aids in building angle while drilling. This also keeps lateral sections within the pay zone.

Long horizontal shale wells in North America rely on drill collars for smooth drilling and accurate placement. Collars have also enabled complex maneuvering of deepwater subsea wells offshore Africa into multiple zones.

(5)High Temperature and Pressure

Under extreme heat in geothermal projects or HPHT conditions, collars withstand enormous stresses that could yield pipe. Their strength reserves act as the first line of defense against borehole instabilities. Thermal expansions are accommodated.

Recent ultra-HPHT successes at Total's diversified wells have demonstrated drill collar robustness at over 700°F and 35,000psi.
