Drilling Jar
Drilling jars are used in the drilling of oil and gas wells to help break free or "jar" a stuck drill pipe.

Principles
(1) Upward Jarring
When the drill string becomes stuck, pick up the string (after first resetting) to pressurize the hydraulic fluid in the upper cylinder, storing energy in the drill string. When the desired weight is picked up, stop lifting and quickly bleed off the pressurized fluid, instantly releasing the stored energy and creating an upward jarring force to free the stuck pipe.
(2)Downward Jarring
When the drill string becomes stuck, slack off the string (after first resetting) to pressurize hydraulic fluid in the lower cylinder, storing energy. When the desired weight is slacked off, stop and quickly bleed the pressurized fluid, releasing the stored energy downward to jar the stuck point free.
