Products Description
Perforated pup joints are an important component in oil and gas drilling operations. They are short sections of pipe inserted between the drill pipe to provide a weak point that breaks preferentially when improper lifting technique causes damage. Selecting the right type is crucial for ensuring smooth drilling operations.
1. Types of Perforated Pup Joints
There are two main types - spiral cut and radial cut.
(1)Spiral Cut Pup Joints
Spiral cut pup joints have slots cut at an angle along the length of the pipe. This angled pattern allows the pipe to twist first before breaking when torsional stress is applied. The spiral slots are normally cut using Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) to achieve smooth and consistent slots.
(2)Radial Cut Pup Joints
Radial cut pup joints have straight slots cut perpendicularly around the circumference of the pipe. The slots weaken the cross-sectional area of the pipe and enable it to break easily under tensile stress. Radial slots are usually machined using a specialized milling machine with rotating cutters.
2. Factors to Consider When Purchasing a Pup Joint
Several factors need to be taken into account when choosing the right type of perforated pup joint for an application:
- Operating Conditions - The operating environment and stresses dictate the type of pup joint required. Spiral-cut pup joints are preferred for high-torque applications like directional drilling. Radial cut joints are suitable for vertical wells where tensile loads are higher.
- Pipe Specifications - The perforated joint needs to have similar dimensions and specifications as the drill pipe string. The slots should occupy only a small percentage (normally under 30%) of the total cross-sectional area.
- Location in String - Pup joints are normally placed between the topmost three joints. The locations experience the highest stresses during operations like tripping out and lifting.
- Manufacturer - Reputable manufacturers follow strict QA/QC processes to meet API standards. The quality of machining and steel has a big impact on the performance and life of the pup joint. VIGOR implements the ISO9001 Quality Management System and the standards of the API Petroleum Association.
Perforated pup joints are critical consumable parts during drilling operations. Radial cut and spiral cut designs are the two main options available. The operating environment, pipe specifications, location in the drill string, cost, and manufacturer quality determine the right selection for an application. Reputed manufacturers who can customize the perforation size and pattern to suit the operating loads should be chosen. you can choose VIGOR, please contact us at info@vigorpetroleum.com.
