These types of connections are designed to ensure that the drill collars can be tightly and reliably connected to other drilling tools in the drill string, ensuring the integrity and stability of the drill string during drilling operations. The combination of different sizes and specifications of drill collars can meet the needs of different drilling depths and wellbore diameters. In shallow well drilling, smaller-sized drill collars may be used, while larger sizes and longer drill collars are needed for deep wells or ultra-deep wells to provide sufficient weight and stability for the drill bit.

(A) Provide drilling pressure
The drill collar is located near the bit in the entire drill string and one of its main functions is to provide the bit with drilling pressure. During drilling, sufficient drilling pressure is the key source of power for the bit to break rock and penetrate the formation. The drill collar can effectively transmit the pressure applied by the ground equipment to the bit by relying on its own weight and a proper configuration in the drill string, enabling the bit to cut into the rock formation smoothly and achieve continuous drilling progress. In deep well drilling, as the depth of the well increases, the hardness of the formation often also increases, in which case a heavier drill collar is needed to provide greater drilling pressure to ensure that the bit can effectively break hard rock.


(B) Ensuring the stability of the drill string
The drill string operates in a highly complex environment deep underground, where it is easily affected by various forces and subject to instability phenomena such as bending and vibration. The presence of drill collars is crucial for maintaining the stability of the drill string. With a larger outside diameter and heavier weight, drill collars can lower the center of gravity of the drill string and reduce its swaying during rotation and drilling operations. Additionally, drill collars have a high degree of rigidity, which enables them to effectively resist the lateral force exerted by the formation on the drill string, preventing the drill string from colliding excessively with the wellbore wall and thus protecting the stability and integrity of the wellbore and the drill string itself. This stability assurance not only helps to improve drilling efficiency but also reduces the probability of underground accidents such as stuck pipe.

During drilling operations, the surface rotary table or top drive equipment needs to transmit torque to the drill bit in order to rotate it and break rock. As an important component of the drill string, the drill collar plays a crucial role in transmitting torque.
