Beam pumping unit Faults and Troubleshooting Methods

Aug 03, 2024

1. Pumping unit shaking

Cause: Improper foundation construction

Solution: Correct according to the blueprint

2. Displacement between parts

Cause: Incorrect installation of the beam pumping unit

Solution: Correct improper assembly points according to the manual

3. Frame or horse head vibration, motor emitting uneven noise

Cause: Loose connection bolts between frame and base, gearbox and base, or base and foundation

Solution: Tighten all connection bolts and regularly check their tightness

4. Crank pin loose in crank hole or periodic noise due to axial displacement

Causes:

① Excessive horse head suspension point load, too many strokes

Beam pumping unit imbalance

③ Improper connection between connecting rod and crank

④ Poor fit between crank pin and shaft sleeve pin hole

⑤ Dirty mating surfaces of crank pin and pin hole

Solutions:

① Readjust parameters according to the manual's technical specifications

② Adjust balance

③ Correct the assembly position of connecting rod and crank

④ Tighten lock nut, implement anti-loosening measures

⑤ Clean pin and pin hole

5. Connecting rod rubbing against crank or flat block

Cause: Skewed walking beam installation

Solution: Adjust walking beam to align its longitudinal centerline with the gearbox's longitudinal centerline

6. Broken connection between crank and gearbox crank shaft, crank violently jumping

Causes:

① Loose differential bolts on crank

② Damaged keyway or key on shaft

Solutions:

① Tighten differential bolts

② Replace with new key, install in a new keyway 90° from the old one

7. Bearing or bearing housing displacement

Cause: Loose bolts

Solution: Tighten bolts

8. U-bolt bending

Cause: Gap between walking beam support and shim plate

Solution: Tighten bolts

9. Walking beam axial displacement

Cause: Loose U-bolts

Solution: Tighten bolts

10. Brake failure or automatic braking

Causes:

① Improperly adjusted brake clearance

② Worn brake (brake pads)

③ Oil contamination on brake drum and brake band (pads)

Solutions:

① Adjust regulating nut to achieve required brake clearance

② Replace brake band (pads)

③ Clean brake drum and brake band (pads) with gasoline

11. Knocking sound in gearbox

Causes:

① Poor Beam pumping unit balance

② Loose fit between shaft gear and shaft, causing displacement

③ Excessive gear wear or breakage

④ Worn or damaged bearings

Solutions:

① Adjust balance

② Replace gearbox

③ Replace gearbox

④ Replace bearings

12. Severe pitting wear or scoring of gearbox gears under good lubrication conditions

Cause: Gear overload

Solution: Reduce load

13. Uneven wire rope tension in hanger

Cause: Wire rope jumped groove and got stuck

Solution: Adjust clearance between wire rope pulley, horse head arc plate, and wire rope pressure plate

14. Loose connection between hanger and polished rod

Cause: Mismatch between polished rod and rod clamp specifications

Solution: Use appropriate rod clamps

15. Belt loosening causing belt slippage

Causes:

① Worn clamp teeth

② Uniform belt elongation

③ Inconsistent belt lengths used

④ Loose fixation of prime mover slide rail

⑤ Oil contamination on belt pulley and belt

Solutions:

① Replace rod clamps

② Adjust center distance

③ Replace with a set of consistent length belts

④ Adjust center distance and tighten bolts

⑤ Clean belt and belt pulley
