Different Between API 5DP And NS-1

Jul 31, 2025

NS-1 vs API 5DP, understanding the difference is critical for operators and procurement teams when selecting drill string components for highdemand applications, ensuring both performance and safety margins are met.

NS1 is a proprietary drilling and completion equipment standard originally developed by Shell over a tenyear period to address the extreme operating conditions of the North Sea, offering enhanced mechanical performance, more stringent inspection, and specialized transition zones compared to the broadly adopted API 5DP drill pipe specification.

API 5DP is developed by the American Petroleum Institute, defines the baseline technical delivery conditions for steel drill pipe-including material grades (E75, X95, G105, S135), dimensions (2 3/8″–6 5/8″ OD), and mandatory testing regimes (tensile, torsion, collapse, nondestructive inspection), organized into product specification levels (PSL 1–3) to suit a wide range of drilling environments.

1. Standards Introduction: NS-1 vs API 5DP

1.1 API 5DP Overview

API 5DP is a globally recognized standard specifying the technical delivery conditions for steel drillpipe with upset ends and weldedon tool joints, intended for onshore and offshore drilling under highstress conditions. It covers:

Material Grades: E75, X95, G105, S135, with minimum and maximum yield and tensile requirements (e.g., E75: 75 ksi min, 105 ksi max).

Dimensions: ODs from 2 3/8″ to 6 5/8″; lengths R1 (18–22 ft), R2 (27–31 ft), R3 (38–45 ft).

Testing & Inspection: Tensile, collapse, torsion, drift, ultrasonic (UT), magnetic particle (MPI), and hardness testing, with requirements varying by product specification level (PSL 1–3).

1.2 NS-1Overview

NS1 is Shell's proprietary standard-a comprehensive quality and inspection framework for new and refurbished drill stem elements developed over ten years to operate reliably in harsh environments like the North Sea. It spans over 100 numbered specifications covering drill pipe, heavyweight drill pipe, collars, stabilizers, and associated equipment, each with tailored mechanical, metallurgical, and inspection criteria.

2. Technical Differences: NS-1™ vs API 5DP

2.1 Materials & Mechanical Properties

API 5DP Grades: Defines alloy steel grades E75 through S135 with specified chemical compositions and mechanical properties, e.g., X95 yield 95–135 ksi, tensile ≥862 ksi.

NS1™ Steels: While NS-1allows similar base steels, it often mandates premium lowalloy or microalloyed steels (e.g., AISI 4145HM, 4130) with adjustments to enhance toughness and uniformity. Manufacturers certify compliance with both NS-1and API as needed.

2.2 Impact Toughness & LowTemperature Performance

NS1 requires higher impact energy at subzero temperatures (e.g., ≥20 ftlb at –50 °F) to prevent brittle fracture in cold climates.

API 5DP offers optional impact testing under PSL2 and PSL3, typically at ambient or mildly reduced temperatures, but does not uniformly mandate the extreme lowtemperature toughness that NS-1enforces.

2.3 Upset Zone & Weld Quality

NS1 Upset Length: Specifies a longer, gradual upset zone to reduce stress concentrations at the tooljoint transition, improving fatigue life.

API 5DP Upset: Defines minimum upset lengths for pipebody ends but follows a more uniform template without specialized transition profiling.

Weld Quality: NS-1enforces stricter weld heattreatment, visual acuity, and NDT acceptance levels for the welding zone, beyond API's baseline UT and MPI requirements. API's UT/MPI regime focuses on detecting weld defects per ISO/ASTM methods but allows manufacturerdefined process control plans.

2.4 Inspection & Traceability

NS1 NDE: Often mandates 100% fulllength ultrasonic testing (FLUT) and supplementary MPI on both body and tool joints, plus internal coating inspections to ensure no inclusions or lamination.

API 5DP NDE: Requires UT and MPI of the weld zone and external body inspection, with coverage based on PSL level (e.g., PSL1 body UT in helical/longitudinal paths), but may permit automated coverage gaps.

Traceability & Marking: NS-1stipulates comprehensive traceability marking, batch documentation, and certification, often including thirdparty audits; API mandates stamping of manufacturer ID, heat number, and PSL level.

3. Guidance for Selection and Application: NS-1 vs API 5DP

3.1 When to Specify NS1

Harsh, Cold Environments: Offshore, Arctic, or HPHT wells where lowtemperature brittleness and fatigue life are critical.

HighCycle / LongReach Drilling: Extended lateral sections that impose repeated bending stresses.

Enhanced Safety Margins: Projects requiring the highest reliability and thirdparty inspection assurance.

3.2 When API 5DP Suffices

Standard Onshore/Offshore Operations: Fields with moderate temperature and stress profiles where API's PSL system addresses operational needs.

CostSensitive Projects: Where the incremental premium for NS1 does not justify the enhanced requirements.

3.3 Procurement Checklist

Define Operating Conditions: Temperature, depth, cyclic loads, corrosion threats.

Choose Grade & PSL/Specification: Match mechanical properties (yield, tensile, collapse, torsion) to well profile.

Inspect & Certify: Confirm required NDE coverage, impact testing temperature, and documentation scope.

Audit & Trace: Ensure manufacturer holds NS1 license (if required) or API Monogram for API 5DP.

Selecting between NS1 and API 5DP drill pipe specifications hinges on balancing performance needs against cost and project risk. NS1 delivers targeted enhancements-especially for cold, highfatigue environments-while API 5DP's PSLbased framework provides a versatile, globally recognized baseline. By understanding and applying the detailed technical gaps outlined above, oil and gas operators can optimize drillstring reliability, safety, and overall drilling efficiency.
