What Precautions Should Be Taken When Using Drill pipe?

Aug 23, 2024

Drill pipe is one of the most common consumables in drilling operations and a critical component of the drilling rig. Its performance significantly impacts the progress of drilling projects. they are typically made from specialized alloy steel tubes for geological applications, with tool joints friction-welded to the pipe body. This construction provides good directional stability and high compressive strength, making them suitable for conventional exploration and coalbed methane drainage. Therefore, proper use and maintenance is an essential skill for any qualified drilling rig operator. Here are some key precautions to consider when using drill pipe:

Implement a regular maintenance schedule, including corrosion prevention and contamination control.

Ensure it is compatible with the rated torque of the drilling rig. Select Drill pipe based on the specifications and performance of the drilling rig model.

When using it with a drill bit, the bit diameter should generally exceed the Drill pipe diameter.

Continuously monitor the condition of both the drilling rig and drilling pipe throughout the drilling process. In case of stuck pipe or other issues, immediately cease drilling or back off slowly to prevent pipe sticking.

During air drilling or pressure testing, verify that all pipe connections are secure. For drilling pipes with sealing elements, such as O-rings, regularly inspect their condition and replace them immediately if damaged or corroded. Clean and maintain sealing elements after completing drilling operations.

When making up its connections, first hand-tighten to ensure proper thread engagement. Do not use the rig to make up connections directly, as this can lead to cross-threading and thread damage.

If its straightness exceeds allowable tolerances or if tool joint threads are damaged, rendering the pipe unfit for normal operation, immediately remove it from service for disposal or repair.

Adhere to technical standards to ensure that drilling depth and geological conditions are within specified limits. This prevents its failures due to excessive depth.

When working in highly acidic or alkaline environments, pay special attention to corrosion prevention. During drilling, use water circulation to remove corrosive layers from the pipe surface.

(10) Store Drill pipes in a dry location with proper support at the bottom end. Perform regular maintenance for long-term storage.

(11) Avoid stacking heavy objects on drilling pipes or using them as supports. Do not store them haphazardly under piles of sand, gravel, or other materials.

(12) After cleaning and maintaining drilling pipes, apply thread compound and install thread protectors for storage to ensure stable performance.
