As the heart of any coiled tubing BHA, the hydraulic disconnect must provide a joint that can reliably disconnect from the BHA should the need arise. When a BHA becomes stuck, the disconnect offers a means to release everything run below it so the coiled tubing can be retrieved from the wellbore and appropriate measures can be taken to fish or retrieve the obstruction from the wellbore.
Disconnect failures are occurring more frequently worldwide as the industry subjects BHAs to higher loads generated from today's anti-friction, milling, and jarring tools, in addition to larger and stronger coiled tubing strings.
Vigor Hydraulic Disconnect mainly consists of two parts: the upper and lower release sections. The upper part, primarily the upper disconnect sub with a ball seat, is connected to the string; the lower part, the lower disconnect sub with a slip anchoring section, is connected to tools such as sand washing valves and motors. When a ball is dropped from the coiled tubing, it finally rests on the ball seat in the Hydraulic Disconnect, forming a sealed piston surface. By applying pressure from the surface, the piston moves downward to shear the shear pins in the Hydraulic Disconnect, and the slip sleeve moves downward.
Due to the special design of the slips, the upper disconnect sub can disengage from the slips. The release pressure can be adjusted by changing the number of shear pins. After release, the upper disconnect sub, ball seat, and steel ball are retrieved, leaving a standard "GS" type internal fishing neck for subsequent fishing operations.
