Mud Motor

 

 

 

1. It consists of 3 sections:

(1)Power section: Rotor and stator interact to convert hydraulic energy into mechanical rotation

(2)Bearing assembly: Provides low friction interface between rotating drive shaft and fixed housing

(3)Driveshaft: Transmits rotational force to turn the drill bit

 

2. Principle

The stator is formed by pressing a rubber liner onto the inner wall of a steel pipe, and its inner bore is a spiral with certain geometric parameters; the rotor is a screw shaft with a hard layer. The rotor and stator mesh with each other, and the difference in their lead forms a spiral sealing chamber to complete the energy conversion. The spiral line of the motor rotor can be single-headed or multi-headed. The fewer the number of heads on the rotor, the higher the speed and the smaller the torque; the more the number of heads, the lower the speed and the greater the torque.

It is part of PDMs, which are downhole power drilling tools that convert hydraulic power from drilling fluid into mechanical energy. When mud pumped by the mud pump flows through the bypass valve into the motor, a certain pressure difference is generated between the inlet and outlet of the motor, which drives the rotor to rotate around the axis of the stator and transmits the speed and torque to the drill bit through the universal shaft and drive shaft, thus achieving drilling operations.

It provides rotational power to drill bits and other downhole tools. Such types of positive displacement motors have downhole turbine motors which are powered by drilling fluids.
